WATTLOOKS TOIMPROVE Steelmenstarwon’tsettleforcurrenttotals

TonyWatt’s numbers have gone up this season – but the Motherwell star says performances have stayed the same.

The striker stood on eight goals for the season prior to facing Dundee United last night (Tuesday), with his contract due to expire next summer. He netted seven times last term.

Watt has played more games for the Steelmen than any other club in his career, and even though he is playing wider in manager Graham Alexander’s system, the 27-year-old says his performances haven’t changed from last term.

He said: “The last couple of games I’ve not really had as many shots. It’s a start to the season that I want to build on. I don’t want to sit on what I have already scored this season.

“I want to keep going. I am playing a bit wider now but I can still score goals from that position. I just want to get in the box and work hard for my teammates. I feel like I do that.

“I feel I bring a lot more to the game than just scoring goals. People probably overlooked my performances last season as the numbers weren’t quite there, but this year they are taking note.”

Watt reckons that consistency has been a big factor i n his displays and said: My performances have been the same as last year. I’ve been performing well and I need to keep going. The biggest thing for me is my consistency.

“I work as ard as I can every single day so I can hopefully bring that consistency on a weekend. I think that is a big thing for me and probably the biggest thing I have learned over the years.

“If I train at 100 per cent during the week, there’s a good chance I’m going to play at 100 per cent at the weekend. If I train at 50 per cent, there’s a good chance I’m going to play at 50 per cent – so I need to keep myself at 100 per cent.”

Watt has bought into the community club ethos at Fir Park and visited a foodbank.

He said: “I’m enjoying being home, being around my family and I want to keep enjoying my football. I’ve got a long career ahead of me and, hopefully, long may it continue.

“The club has bought into me and I have bought into the club. We need to be doing more for places like foodbanks. It’s a time of year where people are struggling.”
