Repairs team signs up to new fairness charter
The company responsible for carrying out North Lanarkshire Council’s repairs and maintenance programmehaslaunchedacharter containing a dozen pledges to staff, partners, contractors and service users.
Mears Group, who work in partnership with the local authority, has affirmed its commitment to being a responsible business with the launch of its Scottish Responsible Business Charter which outlines the series of pledges on how it will operate.
The charter reflects Mears’ commitment to supporting fairness, equality, opportunity, sustainability, and innovation in Scotland.
The pledges include: paying the Scottish Living Wage, creating an independent customer scrutiny board to strengthen tenant rights for customers, having a social responsibility to pass on skills to local communities, and setting firm and achievable commitments to support Scotland’s target of net-zero emissions by 2045.
Alan Long, executive director of Mears Group, told the Wishaw Press: “Our Scottish Business Charter encompasses how we want to operate as a business.
“It reflects our values and is a commitment of how we are going to continue to work harder for our staff, service users and partners.
“The launch comes after a lengthy consultation process which included discussions with stakeholders and decisionmakers, which has allowed us to make sure our commitments are meaningful and will have a real impact on how we operate and evolve as a business.
“We are committed to growing our charter to ensure it continues to reflect Mears, and therefore we will review and scrutinise these pledges to ensure that we are continuing to deliver the best service to our service users and partners, while being a fair and supportive employer.”
Mears Group employs more than 1300 people across Scotland.
In North Lanarkshire it is working with the council on several contracts including building affordable homes and delivering facility management across the council’s 36,700 tenanted properties and 1200 public buildings.
Mears also runs the Safer Homes community service, which provides dedicated tradespeople from Mears Group on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council to perform emergency repairs and install additional safety and security equipment in the homes of those who need it.
