Cemetery plans for Wishaw farmland

Dimsdale Road facility will provide 2600 lairs

- BY ROSS THOMSON

Plans have been submitted to create a new cemetery in Wishaw.

Details of its proposed facility on the site of the former Pather Farm on Dimsdale Road can be viewed within North Lanarkshire Council’s planning portal on its website.

The plans include a new building with storage and welfare facilities for operatives and visitors along with external storage compound, road upgrades, parking waiting area, landscaping and other features.

The planning and design statement confirms: “The intention is to create a new facility to expand the internment capacity of the local authority in a cost effective and phased manner that will be respectful to service users at what is a difficult time.

“North Lanarkshire Council provides upwards of 1900 internments each year, and a significant percentage of these are within new lairs, 474 in 2017-18.

“Cambusnethan Cemetery in Wishaw is one of the council’s busiest cemeteries, with upwards of 200 burials per year and nearly 90 new lairs sold per year on average.

“At this rate, the cemetery will run out of new burial space within six years.

“The creation of a new cemetery to replace Cambusnethan when it reaches capacity has been identified as a priority.”

Last year, the Wishaw Press revealed that plans were in place for the land at Pather Farm to replace Cambusnethan in the near future.

An online public consultation was held in November and December last year.

In a report to the council’s environmental and transportation committee back in May 2020, head of environmental assets, Nicole Paterson, said: “Cambusnethan Cemetery has already been extended several times and there is now no remaining adjacent land suitable for burial.

“The service therefore intends to develop a new cemetery for Wishaw. Phase one would see 1000 new lairs, which would provide for 11 years at current levels of demand.

“More than 1600 further lairs would be created in additional phases.”
