Streetwise pupils beat competitio­n

A primary school in Newarthill was presented with its prizes for coming top in the recent Beat the Street North Lanarkshir­e game.

StTeresa’s Primary scored most in both total and average points, beating off opposition from other schools in theWishaw, Motherwell, Shotts and Bellshill areas.

The North Lanarkshir­e chapter of the popular game invited local people of all ages to walk, cycle and wheel as far as possible around the area during the six-week challenge in return for points and prizes.

StTeresa’s 214 players clocked up an incredible 269,480 points in the physical activity game.

Beat the Street organisers were delighted to present StTeresa’s with a trophy and £600 worth of prizes for their incredible performanc­e in the game.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshir­e Council and Jean Jones, Provost, visited the school to hand the prizes and trophy to the pupils.

The team won £300 of vouchers for winning the total points leader board and a further £300 for winning the average points leader board; and requested the vouchers be split into £300 worth of Decathlon vouchers and £300 worth of Scotia Book vouchers.

Beat the Street is brought to the area by North Lanarkshir­e Council, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places, and Paths for All. It is delivered by Intelligen­t Health.

A total of 13,380 players signed up and together clocked up a total of 78,237 active travel miles.

The community’s achievemen­t clocking up the miles during the six-week game also means that St Andrew’s Hospice benefited from a £500 donation.
