Mums unite to help Ukrainian families

- GREGOR FARQUHARSON

TwoLanarkshirewomenhave organised for a thousand baby boxes to be sent to help victims of the Ukrainian war.

Christine Brown from Motherwell and Jacqueline Crawford from Airdrie started the Facebook group Scottish Preloved Baby Box for Ukraine.

This has led to a national operation to get as many baby boxes to Ukraine and surrounding countries to help as many people as possible.

They now have a base at Glasgow’s The Forge shopping centre where volunteers have been loading hundreds of boxes onto trucks set for countries such as Poland, Romania and Ukraine.

They are looking for items of clothing for babies, teens and mothers as well as other necessities like nappies, soft toys, baby wipes and Sudocrem.

The group started 12 days ago and has already sent hundreds of boxes to families in need.

Christine said: “We have been looking for as much help as we can get and people all across Scotland have helped with donations and loading the trucks.

“Just today more than 800 boxes left the base en route to the Romanian borders.

“We have a great group of mums volunteering to help the victims of the war.

“Many local businesses have been donating and helping out too, such as Rivals Gym in Wishaw and JWB

Build and Repair in Uddingston.” The group’s co-founder, Jacqueline, touched on the generosity of the people across Scotland.

She said: “While I can’t believe the kindness people have shown, what is even more amazing is the effort and commitment from people.

“A very special thanks must go to Jade from the Forge Shopping Centre for the offer of the massive unit.

“I’m gobsmacked at the talent we have seen in the group and the time and commitment they have given and what has been achieved so far.”
