Fundraiser plans after tumour hell

Family looks for support as they thank charities

- GREGOR FARQUHARSON

The family of a brave girl is hoping to raise as much money as possible for two cancer charities.

When Kara McInally, aged seven, first started complaining of a sore head, mum Laura originally thought she may have needed glasses.

But it was when they went to the optician, it was quickly noticed that it was a tumour that was causing Kara problems.

Just four days after her visit to the optician Kara, from Motherwell, had major surgery to remove a 4cm tumour from her brain.

Kara is now undergoing specialist proton beam therapy in Manchester, which will go on until April.

Kara’s aunt, Alison McInally, is hoping that a fundraising event on Kara’s return will be able to raise money for two charities that have been there for Kara and her family.

Alison told the Wishaw Press: “Kara was diagnosed just before Christmas but she has been improving and doing really well.

“She has been down in Manchester for the specialist treatment for a few weeks now and will return in April.

“That’s when we hope to have the big fundraiser event and hopefully we can raise as much money for the two charities that have been so good with Kara.

“The charities are Young Lives vs Cancer and The Brain Tumour Charity. Both these charities have offered immense support for Kara and the family.

“They have been regularly checking up on her and offering support to her mum. They have also been putting Laura in touch with families who have been going through similar things.”

There will be lots on offer at the fundraising event, which is due to be held in April at Hamilton Academical’s stadium.

And Alison is looking for help from the community and local businesses to make it even better.

She said: “We are still looking for donations for raffle prizes, such as spa days or weekends away.

“And we would also ask if any local businesses who can help with catering could come forward. That is something we have been struggling with.”
