Vans on the road to aid suicide prevention work
A fleet of vans is being used as the latest tool in helping drive home the suicide prevention message in North Lanarkshire.
Four specially-wrapped vans will be out on the streets in the local authority area in a new initiative, promoting helpline numbers, raising awareness of suicide prevention, and offering frontline assistance to anyone who may feel that they need it.
The team responsible for driving the vans have undertaken suicide prevention training and are happy to talk to anyone as they go about their duties.
The streetscene vans will be visible on roads throughout the area over the coming months.
Paul Kelly, deputy leader of North Lanarkshire Council (NLC), said the vans were a great way to”get the message about suicide awareness into the heart of our communities”.
He told theWishaw Press:“The vans are very bright, very visible and carry helpline support numbers for those who may be struggling.
“The emotional impact on families and friends bereaved by suicide is devastating and can have awful long-lasting effect on those left behind.
“If you’re worried about someone, a friend or a family member, asking them directly about their feelings can help to save their life.
“By taking the time to show you care and are there to listen, you could change their life.
“This initiative will help us increase awareness about suicide prevention in our communities and will hopefully help people seek support if they need it.”
The vehicles will feature the helpline numbers for Breathing Space, Samaritans and Hopeline UK which is aimed specifically at younger people needing support.
