Wishaw pub is toasted in Holyrood

-

A popular Wishaw pub has been recognised for the role it plays as a vital cog in the community.

Corrigan’s Bar and Grill in the town’s Stewarton Street, is the subject of a motion in the Scottish Parliament, praising it for following up its Wishaw Press Pub of the Year win in 2019 by being named top in North Lanarkshire in the recent Lanarkshire Live Pub of the Year awards.

It was pipped for first place and the Lanarkshire-wide award by East Kilbride’s Village Inn.

The Parliamentary motion was put forward by Wishaw and Motherwell MSP Clare Adamson and was supported by a number of other members at Holyrood.

In addition to congratulating the pub for its awards success, the SNP MSP’s motion also acknowledges the important role that Corrigan’s plays in the local community and wishes it all the best for the future.

The popular town centre bar has been run by siblings Derek Wyse and Tracey Broadfoot for almost a decade, they are recognised in the motion for“building a strong reputation with excellent service”.

Tracey was delighted to hear the business was being recognised by the politicians.

“At first I thought we were in trouble, as I don’t take anything to do with politics,”she joked with the Wishaw Press.

“Out of the blue we got two letters in, which came as a bit of a shock, but it’s good to be recognised in this way,” Tracey admitted.

“We were closed for nearly two years but since we’ve reopened we’ve been so busy, and we’ve not even reopened the kitchen.

“We must be the busiest pub in Wishaw. We have four bar staff on at weekends, two security staff, and a glass collector.

“We’re busier now than we were before lockdown. We’ve been opened again since October but it hasn’t died down at all.

“The young ones are coming in from around 5pm, and some of the older customers are still a bit wary about coming out.”

Motions are available for MSPs to support for six weeks, and after that they remain on the parliament website.
