Another fine mess should spell the end
Motherwell and Wishaw’s MP said Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak should have resigned after being fined due to parties held in Downing Street.
Marion Fellows spoke out following the revelation that the Prime Minister and Chancellor had been fined over the “party-gate” affair. The SNP MP called on the pair to quit or be forced out by their Conservative colleagues.
Mrs Fellows said: “Folk in Motherwell and Wishaw followed the rules and missed the births, marriages and deaths of their loved ones.
“I have no doubt that Boris Johnson had hoped the scandal over partygate would j ust disappear. It hasn’t.
“That a sitting Prime Minister and his Chancellor have broken the rules they imposed on the rest of us is outrageous.
“They must both resign, or Tory MPs must step- up and remove them.”
The PM’s wife, Carrie Johnson, will also be given a fixed penalty notice.
Officials confirmed the three had received notification of the fines from the Met, following an investigation into illegal parties in Downing Street during Covid lockdowns.
Spokespeople for the Johnsons and Mr Sunak said they had not been told which event the fines were linked to.
However, the three were reported to be at the same gathering for the PM’s birthday in June 2020.
Mr Johnson is the first serving prime minister of the UK to be sanctioned for breaking the law.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak must resign.
The Metropolitan Police is investigating alleged Covid lawbreaking at 12 gatherings in Whitehall and Downing Street.
More than 50 fines have been handed out.
