Kelly claims awards night double

There was double delight for Motherwell star Liam Kelly at the club’s player of the year awards on Saturday night.

The Steelmen’s vice-captain picked up both the Players’Player and overall Player of the Year prize at the ceremony, which was held at Dalziel Park Hotel.

Kelly has been a standout performer for the Fir Park club on their way to securing European football next season with a fifth place in the Premiershi­p.

The 26-year-old produced countless world class saves to earn‘Well vital points and that did not go unnoticed by his peers and supporters. His displays also earned him a Scotland call-up.

Motherwell were soundly beaten 6-0 by champions Celtic on their trophy day at Parkhead on Saturday, but boss Graham Alexander and his players put that behind them to celebrate a successful season overall.

Midfielder Dean Cornelius picked up the Young Player of the Year award following a breakthrou­gh season that saw him make 17 appearance­s and score his first goals for the club in wins over St Johnstone and St Mirren.

Dutch striker Kevin van Veen marked his first season at the club by collecting the top goalscorer gong. He netted 11 times during the campaign and has become a firm fan favourite.

The goal of the season prize, however, went to midfidler Callum Slattery for his sizzling strike against Ross County.

There was also a special achievemen­t award presented to club captain Stephen O’Donnell, after he became the club’s record internatio­nal cap holder with 14 appearance­s for his country while a Motherwell player.
