Thug attacks two officers in Wishaw street
A man attacked two police officers during a largescale disturbance outside a North Lanarkshire pub.
One officer needed hospital treatment after Marc Woodward bit his finger, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard on Friday.
Woodward, 26, of Brown Street, Carluke, admitted assaulting two male officers in Caledonian Road, Wishaw, on February 27, 2022.
Neil Thomson, prosecuting, said police had attended a disturbance outside a pub shortly after midnight.
He told the court: “A large crowd of people was on the footpath and road.
“One male officer was dealing with a member of the public regarding a matter of disorder.
“He had his back to Woodward who barged into him.
“The officer attempted to arrest him and both ended up on the ground.
“At this point a large number of people became involved in attacking the officer.
“He and Woodward were struggling on the ground and Woodward placed his arm around the constable’s neck and applied a degree of pressure.”
And he continued: “The second male officer tried to free his colleague but Woodward bit down on his finger, piercing the skin and maintaining the bite for a short time despite being instructed repeatedly to let go.
“Other officers became involved and Woodward’s arrest was finally effected.”
The court heard that one officer sustained bruising to his neck which caused discomfort for several days.
The second officer attended Wishaw General Hospital where he was given Hepatitis B and tetanus jags.
He was prescribed a 10day course of penicillin and underwent blood tests.
Mr Thomson a dded: “Fortunately these were clear and he made a full recovery although he lost his finger nail as a result of the bite.”
Woodward appeared in court as a first offender.
Sheriff John Hamilton deferred sentence until next month for background reports and allowed him to remain on bail.
