Motherwell AC stars lap up hectic month

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Motherwell Athletics Club sent a 15-strong squad to Edinburgh to take part in the Sri Chinmoy 5k race amid a busy month for the club.

Senior athletes took part in the race at Silverknowes Esplanade, which was both this year’s National 5k Championship event, and the fourth race in the club’s 2024 Road Running Championship.

The first Motherwell AC vest over the line was Jonathan Moore, who finished in a personal best time of 15.09.

Next was Michael Cushley, knocking a massive 15 seconds off his previous best in 19.03, and Alan Main in 19.29.

First female for Motherwell AC was Maryann Milne, with a new personal best time of 21.03, followed by Lilly Jeffrey in 22.18 and Gillian McCaffer in 22.19.

Peter Gallagher crossed the line in 22.21, Scott Dickson in 22.29, Colin Gardner in 23.14 and Stephen Pollock in 24.58.

Patricia Allen finished second in her WV70 category, finishing in 33.53.

Meanwhile, the club’s senior endurance athletes have also been in fine form.

A big well done also goes to Emma Main who completed the Belfast Marathon last week.

She said: “Belfast is a cracking city and the roads were packed with supporters all the way, a really good atmosphere with multiple race options on.

“It was a great way to see all parts of the city as well.”

Congratulations go to Russell Berwick who earlier this month took part in the brand new Newcastle- Gateshead Marathon.

Taking in the famous landmarks of Gateshead including Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Sage Gateshead,

BALTIC, Tyne Bridge and the Swing Bridge, the race finished in the iconic Gateshead International Stadium.

Russell finished in a fantastic 3hrs and 17 minutes. This was Russell’s 89th marathon, which is an unbelievable feat.

David McLeary also had an enjoyable afternoon after taking part in the Troon 10k.

The event was organised by the Troon Tortoises starts and finishes on the Troon Promenade, with David running a fantastic race and finishing in 41:48.

Elsewhere, club stars also did well at the 4J Athletics West District Championships in Kilmarnock. The event, which took place at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena over two days, was for younger athletes.

Track and field athlete Eoghan Connelly won two bronze medals, running personal best (PB) times in both his 800m (2:38.97) and 200m (28:29).

Niamh Cameron, Connor McNamee, Martha Steele and Luke Geddes performed well in their events, with PBs all round.

Under- 15 athlete Niamh Cameron clocked 2:49.27 in 800m, as U13 Connor McNamee ran 15.78 in 100m, 2:50.54 in 800m and achieved 3.74m in long jump.

Luke Geddes ran 28.44 in 200m and 5: 23.00 in 1500m, while Martha Steele ran 6:01.72 in 1500m.

Coaches Jac Molloy, Ewen Cameron and Simon Gold were in attendance all weekend.

Finally, five senior endurance athletes took part in the Shettleston 10k at Glasgow Green, which is the first of three races which form the Babcock 10k Series.

Jonathan Moore finished fourth overall in 32: 31, followed by Mark Cushley in 40:41, Paul Allan in 43:00, David McLeary in 43:53 and Angela O’Neill in 50:27.

Angela O’Neill said: “It was a really well organised event with good marshalling throughout. It was a nice, flat course, with lots of encouragement running through Glasgow Green.

“It was great having fellow Motherwell AC members to cheer you over the line in what were very warm conditions.”
