Ladies challenge helps Air Ambulance

WOKINGHAM Bowling Club helped raise money for Thames Valley Air Ambulance with their annual Ladies president versus captain match on Sunday.

In one of the most anticipate­d dates in the club’s calendar, president

Jill Thorne and captain Sue Thomson and the rest of the ladies bowlers did battle in a slightly different style to previous years.

The sides competed in a ‘yardstick’ event, where every bowl within one yard of the back counted as one shot, but there was no overall winner.

Members of the club provided a meal afterwards and the day in total raised £270 for charity.

BRACKNELL have the advantage over Wokingham after the first leg of the Roger Medcalf Cup.

The reverse leg is due to take place in September and Wokingham have a 99-78 deficit to overturn, despite a rink win from Ted Melber, Gerry Deeves and Mike Holmes.

Roger Dollery also skipped his rink to victory in the final clash of the first leg.

Wokingham suffered two defeat in the Berkshire Floodlight League, with the A team falling to a 70-64 defeat against Suttons A, while Wokingham B were edged out 75-77 by Suttons B.

The A team’s best display saw Alan Jeynes, Noel Butler, Len Cooke and Bob Thompson win the rinks contest.

For the B side, Gerry Deeves won in the singles while John MacGregor and Ted Melber drew 22 shots apiece in the pairs.

In the Thames Valley Ladies League, Wokingham Acorns thrashed Sutton Seeds 74-32 in the penultimat­e match of the season.

Wokingham won on all three rinks, skipped by Sandra Thompson, Anne Parker and Lillian Holliday.

There were also a series of friendly matches.

Wokingham Ladies beat Maiden Erlegh 50-44 with the top triple skipped by Jill Francis along with Sylvia Pearce and Joy Deeves, who won by 10 shots.

Wokingham Ladies also travelled to Suttons and came away with a 56-48 win over Suttons with Margaret Argent, Eve Bailey and Gen Hughes’ triple the key victory.

In a mixed friendly, Wokingham beat Palmer Park by 88 shots to 79.

The top triple was skipped by Barry Woolley along with Keith Hutchings and Dora James.
