The Penn is mightier than red-faced Sumas

SUMAS were shown two red cards as their winning start to the campaign came to an end in a feisty affair against Penn and Tylers Green.

Facing another side with a perfect record so far this season, Dan Bateman’s men were level at the break thanks to a Sam Lawrence strike, but lost out 2-1 and also saw two substitutes sent off.

Bateman made three changes to his side which won at Bicester last time out.

Steve Fairchild, Elliott Rushforth and Chris Newlove all came in with Ashley East, Jordan Blake and Matthew Lambert dropping out.

But it was the visitors who took an early lead when Jordan Gumbs dived in to head past goalkeeper Steven Fairchild in the 11th minute.

Sumas were on the back foot again shortly afterwards and they were soon handed their first red card of the afternoon when substitute Tom Williams was dismissed from the bench for dissent towards the referee.

But Bateman’s men levelled just before half-time as Luke Scope broke forwards and teed up Sam Lawrence to tuck in his third goal of the season.

Seeking a winning start to life back at Lowther Road, Sumas also had to battle the elements as a thunderstorm broke out and they fell behind again when Casey Bocarro poached inside a crowded box.

Penn, who won this league last season, went close with Danny Blatchford smashing a shot off the crossbar while Fairchild denied Bocarro.

And Sumas could not carve out another big chance to score a second goal, but they did receive a second red card with Ben Broadhurst sent off by referee Stephen Parkinson after a bad tackle.

Wokingham are in cup action at the weekend, travelling to face Slough Heating Laurencians in the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy.

SUMAS: Fairchild, Carter, Newlove, Lawrence, Day (c), Byrne, Gibbs, N. Bateman, L. Scope, Knight, Rushforth. Subs: Winship, Best, Broadhurst, Williams, Blake.

Attendance: 72
