Sonning turn it around to move into Hillman Trophy final
SONNING came from behind to defeat Donnington Grove and move into the Hillman Trophy final.
Sonning found themselves 3-1 behind after four matches, but a storming comeback saw the hosts triumph 4-3 to book their spot in the showdown at Huntercombe Golf Club next month.
Rodney Barratt’s 2up win was a rare bright spot early on as Kelvin Hodges, John Cameron and Sean Green were all beaten.
But Mark Sawyer (3&2) and Colin Hodges (8&7) secured big victories to send the tie all the way, where Paul Siddle won 2&1.
Elsewhere, 20 golfers made the trip to Guernsey for the Ball Trough Trophy, having won when the islanders travelled to Berkshire back in June.
Saturday’s fourballs ended with Guernsey 6.5-3.5 ahead with the pairs of Malcolm Reid/Duncan Forbes, Bill Branagh/Chris Gurney Jr and Mark Sawyer/Alex Measures earning Sonning points.
And while the visitors fought back on Sunday thanks to full points from Branagh/Richard Ginn, Reid/ Peter Davidson, Forbes/ Graham Burgess, Richard Shillito/Sean Green and Paul Robson/Measures, Guernsey edged to a 10.5-9.5 success.
Sonning’s second string picked up a 3-2 league win over East Berks for their first away victory of the season. Jason Kempson and Mark Noviss (6&5) posted the biggest success.
The 4th side were beaten 3-2 at Goring and Streatley.
