BEHIND THE SCENES OF NEW BOWLING ALLEY

- By GEMMA DAVIDSON

WOKINGHAM’S brand new bowling centre opened for the first time last night, and visitors are sure to find it’s right up their alley.

Wokingham Superbowl, which is run by Big Apple Superbowl Ltd, opened its doors at its new premises for the first yesterday on Wednesday evening, and signals a big step forward for the town centre regeneration.

Owner Michael Appleton, who has overseen the development of the new bowling alley behind the centre’s former site in Wellington Road, said he couldn’t wait for the public to see what is inside.

He said: “We’ve got all the old favourites, two party rooms and a brand new Laserquest, but lots of new things going on too.

“As well as two additional lanes, we have a family diner, which is bright and light and perfect for younger customers, as well as a more grown-up bar area for adults to have a drink and play a few games of bowling with their friends.”

Mr Appleton is also excited about incorporating an escape room experience: four or five rooms where visitors solve puzzles in order to make their way out.

He said: “We are currently exploring the different options that are available, but we have a great space upstairs and escape rooms are great fun.”

The new centre, which has been built in conjunction with Wokingham Borough Council as part of phase one of the Carnival redevelopment, is fully accessible, something which Mr Appleton is incredibly proud of.

He said: “We’ve installed a state-of-the-art lift which means our customers can access every part of our facility. I think it’s so important that everyone can be included.”

The design of the new centre is cutting-edge as well, with inspiration coming from the shopping centres of the Middle East.

Mr Appleton said: “We have this brilliant warm wood effect going on which looks fantastic, it is very much inspired by the shopping malls in Dubai.

“We’re going to have some fantastic bespoke murals on the walls and at the ends of the lanes, it’s looking brilliant. “We couldn’t have asked for a better centre, and we’re really grateful to the council and the architects for designing such a brilliant space for us. “There’s lots of windows letting in lots of natural light, and hopefully in the summer we will be able to extend our seating area outside.

“We know the development works are going to take some time to complete, but I think once this area is finished it is going to be a fantastic place to visit.”

Wokingham Superbowl is now open, and party bookings are being accepted at a discounted introductory rate of £9.95.
