Virginia Water 0 Woodley United 2

WOODLEY needed extra time to see off Virginia Water in the opening round of the Reading Senior Cup.

The Kestrels, who compete one league above Waters, were locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes on Monday evening.

But goals in the additional time from Danny Horscroft and Owen Davies secured a 2-0 victory.

Both sides played decent football during the contest without troubling either keeper, but Alex Reed had to be alert early into extra time to save from Steve Williams.

Two minutes later Woodley were ahead when Toby Briggs rounded the goalkeeper and his shot across goal was bundled in by Horscroft.

The victory was sealed with a minute to play when lively winger Marvin Hinds broke down the left and found Briggs, who moved the ball on to Davies to tuck in his first goal for the club.

Virginia Water ended the game with 10 men after Finn Evered was dismissed for dissent.

Woodley United 1 Lydney Town 1

THAT victory came just three days after Woodley drew 1-1 with Lydney Town in the Hellenic Premier Division.

United went into the weekend on the back of a three match losing streak and they almost took the lead midway through the first half when Briggs and Jaydyn Englefield were both denied in quick succession by goalkeeper Richard Thomas.

And James Anderson’s men took the lead two minutes into the second half when a mix-up in the Lydney defence allowed Horscroft in to tuck into the empty net.

Woodley missed chances to go 2-0 up and they were duly punished on 66 minutes when a low cross was converted by Niall Halford.

James Tennant struck the post for the hosts as they looked to get back in front but the spoils were shared.

Woodley host Brimscombe and Thrupp on the league on Saturday (3pm) before travelling to Brackley Town Saints on Wednesday (7.45pm).
