Rams survive late comeback

-

REDINGENSIANS survived a late Redruth comeback to clinch a sixth straight victory.

Rams led 19-0 early in the second half at Old Bath Road thanks to two penalty tries and a Conor Corrigan score.

But the visitors rallied to within nine points before

Seb Reynolds’ men closed the game out 21-12 to stay fourth.

“I was really impressed by the way the boys built pressure in the first half,” said Reynolds.

“Redruth are a strong side and we knew they would look dangerous at some point, but the players kept their composure for another good win.”

Rams edged out struggling Wimbledon last time out, but were always likely to face a tougher task against a side just one place below them in the table.

Redruth had won the last four meetings against Redingensians, but they struggled to deal with the hosts’ dominant pack from the start.

Jordan Souter crossed the whitewash early on, only for the referee to pull the game back for a forward pass.

More chances were coughed up by Rams, but they finally took the lead on 30 minutes as Corrigan burst through to score under the posts with Tom Humberstone adding the extras.

A ninth penalty try of the season soon followed to open up a 14-0 lead going into the break.

Redruth’s hopes were further dashed when captain Richard Brown was given a yellow card and Rams took full advantage with another penalty try following a powerful drive.

The visitors quickly replied with their first try of the day on the hour mark and this sparked a series of attacks on the Redingensians defence.

But they rode out the storm and tried to rally for a bonus point try, but came up just short.

The league now takes a week off before resuming on November 25.

n CROWTHORNE’S struggles in Berks, Bucks and Oxon Premier continues with a 50-10 home defeat by Hungerford.

The Crows remain at the foot of the table on minus eight points after failing to raise a team for one of their matches.

n BRACKNELL lost 25-16 at home to Ivybridge in the South West Premier and now sit 10th in the table.
