Twyford celebrates twining partnership
AROUND 50 people turned out last Saturday for the signing of the twinning agreement between Twyford and the French village of Cuincy.
Roy Mantel, chairman of Twyford Parish Council and the Mayor of Cuincy, Claude Hego, signed the official document as part of a busy weekend of events to mark the twinning.
Afterwards, the small French delegation of five people who made the journey were presented with a copy of the letter from Prime Minister Theresa May welcoming the occasion, along with a commemorative plate. It featured the crests of the two villages.
Gordon Storey, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, said: “It was a glorious weekend and one that seals a friendship between our two communities.
“So many people have worked very hard to bring this historic event about and they deserve a lot of credit. The village was beautifully decorated with bunting and French flags and our visitors and new friends were given a tour.”
The signing took place in the youth centre from where guests were entertained to a short football match by the Twyford Comets. Afterwards, the team presented the French delegation with a signed football and it is hoped they will travel to Cuincy later this year for a special football match.
As part of the visit, there was also a wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial at St Mary’s church.
