Win sees Boars reach cup final

GOALS from Cameron Miller and Sam Hutchings guided Eversley to the Combined Counties Division One Cup final.

While many games across the region were called off, the Boars welcomed Deportivo Galicia to Fox Lane and took the lead through Hutchings.

And that advantage was doubled after the restart following another long throw with Miller (pictured) turning the ball in.

That sets up a clash with Staines Lammas at Windsor’s Stag Meadow on May 5 after Staines saw off runaway league leaders Worcester Park 1-0 in the other semi.

“Worcester Park are absolutely flying this year and will be deserved winners of the division,” Boars boss Phil Ruggles told The Wokingham Paper.

“I think they’ve been the most consistent team in the league.

“For them to lose to Staines without scoring was quite a surprise.”

As for Eversley, they came into the weekend’s semi-final on the back of four straight victories but Ruggles admits he did not expect to have a match.

“A lot of games got called off,” he said.

“If I’m honest, I thought ours would also be called off.

“Somehow there was no surface water on the pitch, the pitch cut up during the game and I just felt on the day we handled the conditions better than they did and took our chances when they came.”

Arguably the stand-out result of Eversley’s run to the final was the 3-2 victory away at Sheerwater.

And Ruggles believes that win in February was a big moment of the season.

“We hadn’t won in five going into that game,” recalls the Boars boss. “So to beat Sheerwater and to be fair I think the score-line flattered them really, we played very well in that game.

“I think that was probably the turning point for us in the last few months.

“I think we just took it on from there and confidence has grown.” Eversley and California are back in league action this Saturday, hosting Bedfont and Feltham (3pm) before travelling to Bagshot on Tuesday (7.45pm).
