Defeats see Kestrels facing relegation

-

WOODLEY UNITED’S relegation fears continue to grow after backto-back home defeats.

The Kestrels were level at 0-0 at half-time against both Tuffley Rovers and Highworth Town, but eventually succumbed to 2-0 and 3-1 defeats, which leaves them second from bottom of the table.

Having gone agonisingly close to victory in their last game, a

4-4 draw with Windsor, James Anderson named an unchanged side for the visit of Tuffley.

And Woodley started brightly with Haydon Richardson going close to an early opener while Sam Guze blazed over.

But goalkeeper Alex Reed was soon called into a fine stop, brilliantly clawing Shayne

Bradley’s header away from the top corner.

Danny Horscroft and Richardson kept pressing to push Woodley ahead before the half was out but both were off target.

And the misses proved costly as Tuffley grabbed the lead just moments after the restart with Bradley prodding in from a corner.

Woodley were not deterred with Carl Prestidge and Richardson trying their luck, but Tuffley sealed the win late on through Brett James.

WOODLEY: Reed, Guze (Wilson 76), Prestidge (Thomas 86), Bridges, I. Kamara, Cooper, Davies, A. Kamara (Briggs 65), Richardson, Horscroft, Beckett. Subs not used: Barley, Turner.

Still in the relegation zone, the Kestrels knew they had a tough task on their hands when promotionchasing Highworth visited Rivermoor on Tuesday evening.

But again Woodley competed well, going in at the break goalless with Reed denying Jordan Roberts before Ash Edenborough hit the crossbar.

However, the resistance was broken early in the second half when Edenborough turned in with Wayne Turk quickly making it 2-0.

And the game was won with an Edenborough penalty before Toby Bridges pulled one back for his first goal of the club in the 3-1 defeat.

Woodley sit 19th in the table, two points behind Highmoor Ibish with five games to play, starting with a home league clash against Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Friday night (7.45pm).

WOODLEY: Reed, Barley (Guze 59), Prestidge, Bridges (Morgan 76), I. Kamara, Cooper, Hagger, A. Kamara, Richardson, Briggs (Thomas 65), Beckett. Sub not used:
