The Woodley Women’s Club

THE Woodley Women’s Club met at the Oakwood Centre recently to hold their 59th AGM.

The meeting began with the presentation of a cheque for £855 to June Leatham who is the Charity Fundraising Manager for the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

This amount will go towards a new scanning ultra machine for the cancer unit which will help by giving a much clearer and more accurate picture of suspect lumps and because it is a quicker procedure, will reduce waiting times.

This money was raised over the past year by club members who held two bric-a-brac sales in Woodley Precinct under the new Centre Stage plus a cake stall at the Woodley Carnival.

This was followed by the Secretary’s report who covered all the interesting speakers we had enjoyed over the past year, plus the wonderful trips our Social Secretary had arranged. This was followed by the Treasurer’s Report and a Vote of Thanks was given to the Committee.

Our Social Secretary had decided to stand down and was presented with a card and voucher as a “Thank You” for all the excellent work she had done over the past years – we will miss her very much and so far, nobody has come forward to take up the position. The rest of the committee were happy to stand again and were voted back on.

Then a vote was taken to decide on our chosen charity for the coming year.

The Link won this vote and we will be raising funds as in previous years by bric-a-brac sales and a cake stall at the Carnival.

The AGM then closed and we enjoyed wine and nibbles, followed by a brief talk by Mary Bird, Treasurer of the National Association of Women’s Clubs who told us what the NAWC had been involved in over the past year and what will be happening in the future.

She also told us that as from April 1, the Woodley Club will be the only one still operating in Berkshire as others have had to close due to lack of numbers, but with ours operating on a membership of 120 there must be something very special about our club.

After some readings from club members it was time for the raffle.
