Pub looking for heroes to join its charity day

A WOKINGHAM town centre pub is gearing up to hold its annual charity day for Help For Heroes.

The Hope and Anchor in Station Road is planning a host of fun on Sunday, May 6 including food, music and a mini-beer and cider festival.

This is the fifth year that the pub has organised the familyfriendly fun day and landlady Hattie Gutzman wants to ensure that it’s the biggest and best yet.

“There will be live music from local musicians throughout the day,” she said.

“We’ll have a barbecue in the beer garden from about 2pm where we’ll be serving high quality food that we’re known for including chicken kebabs and burgers.

“And we’ll have a good selection of beers and ciders for people to enjoy.”

Last year, the musicians performed a range of acoustic sets in the pub’s beer garden, offering a chance to hear local talent in a relaxed setting. Acts included Nicky Boot, Myths and Will Dixon. Everyone who performs gives their time for free so that as much money as possible is raised for Help For Heroes. The charity aims to provide better facilities for British servicemen and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty.

“We all pitch in and give our time for free,” Ms Gutzman explained.

Customers will be encouraged to make donations during their visit, while the pub will also be holding a raffle featuring prizes donated by local Wokingham businesses.

“The aim of the day is to raise as much money as we can. Last year we had a brilliant response so we hope we can beat it.

“The date is right in time for the May Day bank holiday so there’s no excuses. We’ve been fortunate enough to raise a lot of money and that’s only through all of your help. So save the date and save those pennies,” Ms Gutzman added.

Last year’s event raised more than £1,200.

The pub also hosts a band every Saturday evening as well as open mic, folk and blues evenings and board game nights.
