An all-star night of comedy

ASALUTE to vintage comedy will help keep the memory of silent movie giants alive. The Hexagon is to be the venue for a star-studded evening of laughter in June.

Henning Wehn, Griff Rhys Jones and Phill Jupitus are among the first acts to be confirmed for the evening, in aid of the Slapstick Festival, a movement that provides an annual salute to silent screen entertaine­rs as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and their visual comedy successors including The Goodies, Monty Python and The Young Ones.

The full line-up is still being finalised but others taking part will include Struck Off and Die’s co-founder Dr Phil Hammond and singing impression­ist Jess Robinson who appeared on Britain’s Got Talent.

Henning Wehn’s star is rising all the time and has appeared on panel shows such as Have I Got News For

You as well as being Germany’s comedy ambassador.

Phill Jupitius is well-known for being a team captain on the musical quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks but is an accomplish­ed stand-up in his own right.

And actor, comedian and TV presenter Griff Rhys Jones will be the compère for the evening.

Announcing the plans Slapstick’s director Chris Daniels said: “We’re thrilled that so many of today’s top comedians recognise the importance of rememberin­g the comedy greats of the past and are keen to help us raise the extra money needed to keep the festival going and growing.

“We’re also delighted that their generosity gives the public a unique chance to see such a stellar array of contempora­ry comedy talent in action live on the same bill.”

Griff Rhys Jones said: “I’m delighted to be hosting Slapstick’s comedy fundraiser. It’s a great festival and one I’ve enjoyed attending and taking part in. It’s a very good cause and it’ll be a great and very funny night.”
