Woodley Townswomen’s Guild

- Lesley Powell

WOODLEY Townswomen’s Guild held its first meeting this year in February with a members’ social evening.

Unfortunately our AGM had to be postponed due to the bad weather in March but this was held at the beginning of April and we were pleased to present a cheque for £400 to Adrian Alresford from Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue, our charity of the year.

We belatedly celebrated International Women’s Day recently with a delicious buffet lunch at the Land’s End pub which most of our members attended. We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor of Woodley, Cllr Jenny Cheng, who told us about her very varied role.

Our secretary told us about how the Townswomen’s Guild was formed, and some of our members entertained us with poetry and readings.

We also had a display board entitled Women through the Decades, giving information on women’s achievements since the suffragette movement, and photographs of our Guild’s activities were also on display for our members to enjoy.

We are looking forward to the coming year with a programme of varied speakers. As well as our regular small group activities we are also planning trips to the Chiltern Open Air Museum and to the Winchester Flower Festival.

Visitors are always welcome at our meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 7.45pm at Chapel Hall, Loddon Bridge Road, Woodley. Further information can be found on our web page on the Townswomen’s Guild website.
