Woodley Women’s Club

- Molly Cheesman

ONCE again the Woodley Women’s Club have enjoyed another excellent month.

Both meetings were attended by 74 members and the first speaker was Antony Wood and what a wonderful evening we had.

Antony’s talk was a nostalgic walk down memory lane during which we were put into groups.

We were given clip-boards and each group chose a category to list their memories. These categories were food, travel, health, clothes and entertainment and it was amazing how many memories came flooding back.

At our next meeting the speaker was Mark Green who had spent 32 years in the Fire and Rescue Service. He began his training at the age of 18 at Eastleigh Training Centre in 1978 after which he was posted to Basingstoke.

We saw many slides showing photographs of him in action dealing with fires, many of which were local to Woodley and on November 20, 1992 he was in action when Windsor Castle caught fire.

He is now enjoying his retirement giving flying lessons.

At the moment we are busy preparing for our cake stall at the Woodley Carnival and our Table Stop Sale in Woodley Shopping Centre both of which will be held in June.

All money raised from both of these events will got our chosen charity for the year The Link Visiting Scheme.

On Tuesday, we enjoyed a trip to the Royal Albert Hall to attend the Friendship Concert.

This is always an excellent event and this year it is entitled Symphonic Rock.

Our next meeting will be held at the Oakwood Centre on Monday, May 14, when our speaker will be Sue Milton, a photographer whose talk is entitled Cherry Blossom in Japan.
