Relegation looms for Kestrels

Woodley United 0 Longlevens 3

WOODLEY look set to be relegated after a season-ending 3-0 defeat at Rivermoor.

The exact make-up of next season’s leagues remains to be decided, but the loss leaves the Kestrels 19th in the table with the bottom two almost certain to go down.

James Anderson’s men went into the weekend still with some hope of survival following an incredible comeback win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Thursday night.

Wootton Bassett led 2-0 at halftime through goals from Matt Jones and Dale Richards, but Woodley got some hope when substitute Toby Bridges pulled one back five minutes after the restart.

And the revival was well and truly on when Danny Horscroft netted from the penalty spot on 66 minutes.

Woodley pushed hard for the three points they knew they needed and found the breakthrough in the closing stages thanks to captain Iddy Kamara with his first goal of the campaign.

But Anderson’s men could not repeat the trick on Saturday.

Despite beating Longlevens 4-1 in the reverse fixture just nine days earlier, the Kestrels fell behind just before half-time at Rivermoor through Brad Martin’s goal.

Shaun O’Connor doubled the tally 20 minutes from time before Connor Linham completed the win in the dying moments.

Woodley end the campaign in 19th place on 26 points and are likely to drop into a new-look Hellenic Division One for 2018-19.
