VOLUNTEER CORNER

- With Helena Badger

Young Enterprise empowers young people to harness their personal and business skills.

They make the connection between schools and the world of works, enabling young people to develop the knowledge and attitude they need to succeed building on skills such as communication, initiative, problem-solving, team work and resilience.

They are currently looking for volunteers to help as Business Advisors/Mentors to the support groups of pupils from local schools in Wokingham, Crowthorne, Ascot and Bracknell.

Mentors are matched up with one group of 10-15 pupils based at one school and guide and advise them throughout the year. Business knowledge would be advantageous but not essential.

The mentor would need to be a good role model and be able to act as a ‘critical friend.’

Commitment would be term time only, approximately one hour per week usually during the day or after school and then possibly a further couple of hours in our own time.

Young Enterprise is also looking for more volunteers to join their local Board in the Wokingham and Bracknell area. This is ongoing role and the board helps arrange events and seminars for all the schools involved in Young Enterprise in the area. Please contact us for more information.

The Link Visiting Scheme aims at reaching people who have become socially isolated by offering friendship, support and a listening ear.

They need befrienders who will be responsible for visiting an elderly local resident on a regular basis.

This can be as frequently as you choose and will be up to you to arrange with the person you are visiting.

This scheme can be hugely rewarding and makes such a difference to the person you are visiting.

Wokingham Macular Support Group is a support group for people with Macular conditions (affecting their sight.) They meet every third Monday in the month from 10am-noon at Chestnut Grange in Wokingham.

They are looking for a volunteer to help with the general running of the group, making teas and chatting to the members of the group.

An understanding of sight difficulties and practical caring skills are a must.
