Linda’s tale of love, lust and loss

-

A WINNERSH grandmother who only took up writing after she retired has published her second novel, writes James Hastings.

Linda Fawke said she is delighted to have completed the book, A Prescription for Madness, and is now considering a third.

Both books which she describes as stories of “love, lust and loss,” have been influenced by Linda’s career as a pharmacist.

“I didn’t start writing fiction until 11 years ago and as well as the novels, I have also written travel pieces,” she explained.

“Before that, my writing was always in the scientific field where accuracy is very important. Writing fiction was very different and it took me a while to find my style.”

After winning a number of writing competitions, Linda was helped by an editor and is delighted both her novels are now available.

A Prescription for Madness focuses on successful businessowner Kate Shaw who becomes pregnant after a fling with a previous lover. Pregnancy in her fifties was never part of her life plan and the preoccupation takes over her life. The result is a story about dark choices, gnawing discontent and the uncertainties of love.

“My first book left some unanswered questions although I would describe the second as much more serious,” added Linda. “I have a vague idea of the story before I start and I let my characters talk to me. I tend to write late at night when its very quiet.

“It has been challenging but very rewarding and a lot of fun.

“It’s thrilling to see my novels published and I do enjoy meeting readers. Wokingham library has been very helpful allowing me to do signings and talks.”

Linda, who has three children and six grand-children, says her family and husband, Tony, have all been very supportive.

“Tony is my main proof reader and he will make suggestions now and then,” she explained.

“A lot of people want to write a novel but don’t get round to it.

“After I retired, I set myself a daily goal of so many words and I stuck to it. I then revised and edited what I’d written.

“I would encourage anyone thinking of writing a novel to just do it.”
