Early bath beckons

Woodley United 1 AFC Aldermaston 2

-

WOODLEY look set for an early exit from the Subsidiary Cup after being edged out by Aldermaston at Rivermoor.

The Kestrels sit bottom of Group B with no points from their three games so far.

It was another good display from Jon Laugharne’s men, who appear to have turned a corner following a poor start to the season, but Pablo Fernandez’s goal could not prevent another loss.

Aldermaston started the better of the two sides, taking the lead when Lemar Maycock netted from close range.

That appeared to spark Woodley into life, going close to equalising through Toby Briggs and Harry Swabey.

Goalkeeper Callum Sangwell was making his debut in goal for Laugharne’s charges and in doing so became the 39th player used by Woodley already this season.

He made a stop to deny a second Aldermaston goal, but could do nothing to prevent Jamel Forde-Small making it 2-0 against the run of play in the second half.

The hosts continued to rally with Freddie Barron striking the post and they did pull a goal back in stoppage time as Fernandez continued his fine form, but it came in vain. Woodly face the reverse fixture in this competition on Tuesday night (7.45pm). WOODLEY: Sangwell, Hawkins (Gilbert 82), Jewell, Malone, Sissons (Blakemore 82), Alexander, Barron, Guze, Swabey, Briggs, Fernandez. Sub not used: Axton-Hall.

Attendance: 30.
