Derby was edge of the seat stuff

LAST WEEKEND was important for us, not least because we knew Sunday night at the Hive was going to be a great way to celebrate Halloween with our fans. A big contingent of travelling supporters, Ghoul Zone and a fancy-dress competition all added to the holiday atmosphere. And there’s nothing like ice-hockey to light up the night.

First we had to travel to Streatham on Saturday. Josh Smith was still injured but we were delighted to give David Millner his first appearance for the Bees. It was a fast, intense game and the single goal that won it does not reflect the number of chances that kept the fans on the edge of their seats. We defended well and Danny Milton was rewarded for his shut-out with the man-of-the-match award.

A local derby, as in any sport, has a special edge to it. We’d narrowly lost our last two home games so that added to our determination to win against Basingstoke. Dean Skinns took over the net-minding duties. Another shut-out and another man-of-the-match award for our goaltender.

The large crowd enjoyed the cut and thrust of the game which came to a thrilling climax. Bison were on a power-play with just over a minute to go. To pull back our single goal lead, they withdrew their netminder to give them a 6-4 advantage in players on the ice. Our fans erupted as Roman Malinik fired the puck up the ice towards the empty net. The noise was deafening as the puck entered the net to double our lead.

All the best firework displays end with the best firework!

Our next home game is on November 10 against Streatham. I know all our fans are looking forward to that. If you’re new to icehockey, come and join us for a great night of hockey. It’s the best value entertainment Bracknell has to offer.
