Last-gasp goal keeps Sumas hopes alive

Wokingham and Emmbrook 3 AFC Aldermaston 3

-

JOE CUMMUSKEY struck a late equaliser to keep the Sumas’ hopes of cup progression alive.

Wokingham trailed Aldermaston 2-0 during the first half at Larges Lane on Tuesday evening, but battled back to draw with James Clark and Cummuskey adding to Jake White’s earlier strike.

Dan Bateman made five changes to the side which lost at Woodley and the Sumas started well with White and Elliott Rushforth going close to breaking the deadlock.

But Aldermaston took the lead when goalkeeper Felix Davies’ clearance fell to the feet of Josh Blackwood to chip in.

That advantage was doubled on 25 minutes when Jamel Forde-Small lashed in following a short corner to the edge of the box.

Back came the Sumas, creating some pressure before eventually pulling a goal back when George Marsh sent White away to fire into the bottom corner.

Barely a minute into the second half the hosts were level as Chris Robson played in Clark to finish well.

Forde-Small grabbed his second of the evening on the hour mark as Wokingham fell behind again and Davies was then called into numerous fine stops at the other end before his opposite number Ashley East was sent off for dissent after making a save in the Aldermaston goal.

The visitors were then reduced to nine men in the closing stages after Josh Harris was fouled and the Sumas took full advantage to equalise at the death through Cummuskey’s curling effort.

Holyport sit top of Group B on 10 points, three clear of Aldermaston, who in turn are two points ahead of Wokingham having played a game extra. Woodley prop up the group on three points.

The Sumas host Abingdon Town in the league on Saturday (3pm).
