God is our comforter

- Roy Prentice is an Elder at Norreys Church, on behalf of Churches Together in Wokingham

“TO the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus”

1 Corinthians 1:2-4

Unfortunately in life bad things happen, regardless of belief or not. The death of a close friend or family member, or an accident, losing your job are just some examples of awful things that can happen.

These events are at the least unsettling, and can turn our world upside down. Being a Christian does not exempt me from such experiences. But it does reinforce that God is a loving God.

He can take my (or your) anger, confusion and hurt and still be there as a comforter. It’s at these moments, or afterwards when I reflect on a tough time, that I see how God has brought me through, just as he promised in Psalm 23.

We live in a world where people have a free will and can do the wrong thing or make mistakes, or we face natural disasters / situations that baffle us. But God is there to comfort and bring us through stronger and more assured of who He is.

There is no sin or disaster so big that he cannot help if you let him into your life, then He will walk with you as He promised in John 16:33.
