Christ-mass spirit

- From Corpus Christi Church on behalf of Churches Together in Wokingham

IF PEOPLE called you a “thing” or an “it” you wouldn’t be very happy. But in fact that is exactly what the world and most of society do much of the time. You are known by the Government, the banks, your employer and the NHS etc. etc. as a number, albeit a unique one and then you are lumped with others into various categories – by age, by gender, by wealth, by location etc. etc. for someone to analyse.

All this is dehumanising and reminds me of the day when our “Personnel Director” had her title replaced by “Human Resources Director” and we became a resource like a piece of office equipment to be moved around or disposed of at will.

Thank God, literally, that He made us truly unique as science has proven many times – fingerprints, iris patterns, and DNA. Even identical twins are not identical, though they came from the very same egg.

Like us, the REAL Christmas Spirit is a who, not a what. He is and always has been the “Holy Spirit” that we welcome at Christ-Mass the title we call our Christian gatherings.

There are of course, fleeting, glittering glimpses of the Real Spirit in the markets, the shops, our homes and often our workplaces at this time of year. But these are definitely THINGS brought out for a season and at best are no more than a reminder of the birth of the Baby Jesus.

However, that is something that happened some 2,000 years ago. What is less remembered is that when Jesus passed through death and returned to His Father, they sent the Real Holy Spirit to live with, guide and guard anyone and everyone who genuinely invites Him into their life and He is still available today.

So why don’t you go ahead and do just that – invite Him into YOUR life, either in a quiet spot on your own or perhaps more helpfully, contact a Christian who already has Him in their life.

What’s more, this Holy Spirit is truly life giving and FREE – unlike the spirits in a bottle we BUY at this time of year.
