Introducing the Saint Vincent de Paul Society

- David Thomas is the President of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) at Corpus Christi Church in Wokingham

THE Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) is an International Christian voluntary organisation, providing direct practical assistance to anyone in need.

The society began in 1833 in Paris in response to a challenge to a student called Frederick Ozanam: “If you think you are a Christian, show us your good works”. Frederick and some friends responded by helping the poor of Paris and took St Vincent de Paul as their patron. The idea of a group of Christians helping the poor met a need and the charity spread growing into an international organisation operating in 150 countries

In England and Wales there are 10,000 members. The motivation stems from our religious belief, but we are not here to ‘convert’ people, or impose our faith.

Our main objective is to offer the hand of friendship and a listening ear to people during difficult times.

SVP Corpus Christi Wokingham was formed in August 2017; during this time we have supported many people referred by parishioners and local organisations.

While a major part of what we do is befriending people, our overall objective is the relief of poverty and disadvantage by helping and supporting vulnerable people. The SVP: Visits the sick, at home, in care or hospital. Helps families struggling to meet basic needs. Supports young carers

Provides transport for medical appointments for those with limited mobility

Supports the homeless

In short we treat people as we would like to be treated!
