Wokingham PROBUS Club
WOKINGHAM PROBUS Club members meeting at Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell on Wednesday, May 1 were welcomed with the lilting
Welsh tones of an extract from Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood given by Jonathan Jones.
Jonathan is the well-known town crier of Farnham and, as well as talking on that job, he also covers a range of literary characters.
We had previously heard him as Rudyard Kipling and welcomed him back for this Dylan Thomas presentation.
The works of Dylan Thomas are appreciated by many, but his life was troubled and his early talent was submerged in the alcoholism which led to his early death in America in 1953.
His works live on, and are muchloved.
Jonathan’s story of the poet’s upbringing, literary and family life through to his sad demise was enthralling.
It was expertly delivered with insertion of some of the well known poems such as Death Hath No Dominion and A Child’s Christmas In Wales together with further extracts of Milkwood. A much-appreciated performance. Our picture shows club chairman, Cec Williams, left, and speaker, Jonathan Jones.
