Wokingham Today

Our lovely little town ofWokingham

-

At this unprecedented time of world wide pandemic may I focus on our little town of Wokingham?

Nearly 30 years ago my husband retired from his life as a busy surgeon and we moved to Wokingham to be near the larger part of our family.

We have seen many changes here over those years in the growth of population and new housing and indeed some of those changes are proving rather difficult to assimilate. However, I find that the basic sense of wellbeing in the town still remains.

During this time of Covid people have still helped their immediate neighbours and then included many others in need.

Older residents living alone have been cared for by schemes such as The Link; churches, shops, charities and others joined forces; individual folk delivered medicines from our pharmacies to the housebound along with the social services who still retained most of our vital needs.

Although the Shute End offices are still closed, employees work from home to maintain the services we take for granted.

May I make a personal tribute to my local borough councillor for Norreys Ward, Rachel Burgess?

We had no working landline phone from late February up to last week. The provider involved ignored my attempts to contact them because only my husband’s name was on our bill. He was then in hospital and on returning home lockdown ensued and they became even more intransigent. Countless, frustrating contacts proved useless until Rachel took over in August.

Meanwhile, I had to bring my ignorant self up to speed with Androids and smartphones etc. which proved easier than I feared and I now have a reasonable level of competence.

Again, thank you to my longsuffering, younger techie-friends.

Keep going Wokingham ‘cos you're well worth it!’
