CLASP Wokingham
PEOPLE with learning disabilities who live inWokingham borough are invited to join in a four-day virtual roadshow, running online later this month.
It is organised by CLASP Wokingham, a charity that seeks to help this community. It has been running twice-weekly Zoom calls, using a secure line, to hold its meetings and between Tuesday, September 22 to Friday, September 25, it will run a series of special events all based on the theme of health.
Debs Morrison, CLASP’s manager, said: “The subject is health and we have some great speakers along with some fun – singing, dancing and a quiz.
“We are blessed to have so many enthusiastic speakers who care passionately about our learning disabilities community.”
The programme opens with a teaser day, which includes a quiz. Aby Jones fromWokingham Borough Council’s sport and leisure departments will be leading a Dancing to Music exercise session.
On theWednesday, Gemma White, a public health project officer fromWokingham Borough Council, will talk about the latest guidelines. This will be followed by Shane Venn, a mindful health and wellbeing physical activity coordinator fromWokingham Borough Council. He will speak about staying healthy.
Carol Price, who is a health care assistant from the NHS Learning Disability Community Health Team
will talk about hospital passports and DNR; and Josh Hancock from Optalis Supported Employment Teamwill speak on returning to work if you have a learning disability.
There are seven speakers on Thursday, September 24, all looking at different types of transition.
Nakita Baptiste and Amanda Brierley, two social workers at Wokingham Borough Council, talk about their support to people. Then Gail Fletcherwill give an update on the council’s autism and learning disability strategy.
EmerMoore fromAddington School inWoodleywill share insights into how the school prepares students for a life outside of its buildings.
Terri Lazzari, who is the chief executive of Support Horizons, will be sharing experiences of its clients, and Zoran Matric, a community engagement officer at Wokingham Borough Council, will talk about activities in the area.
The final day’s events start with Carol Price, from the NHS’s Learning Disabilities Community Health Team sharing the latest coronavirus updates, coping strategies is the focus for Shannon Wilson’s session.
The town clerk ofWokingham Town Council, Jan Nowecki, will then share insights into the council’s Covid situation.
And, to end on a high note, Sing Healthy Choirs will be on hand to lead a singing session.
