EVERYBODY loves a Sunday roast … but not everyone loves the work that goes into it. So, a new home delivery service will be right up the street for many of us – all the trimmings, some succulent cuts and even the right wines to go with it. All for collection or delivered to your door.

And with all the hard work prepared for you by a chef with Michelin star experience, the only thing you’re left with is full bellies and minimal washing up. Sorted.

Chris Murray is the genius behind this idea, launching Roast Wokingham during lockdown to enable people to enjoy a high-quality Sunday lunch.

There’s a menu posted weekly on Facebook, simply order in advance and let Chris and his team do the hard work for you.

Options for vegetarians are included and there’s also desserts as well.

Paired with those wines carefully selected by The Tasting Barn from Holme Grange and it’s the perfect way to relax and unwind – a top Sunday, in other words.

Our meal was delivered in a Covidsafe way, bang on the time we’d been advised, perfectly packaged and ready to serve.

Both my husband and son enjoyed roast beef, perhaps the quintessential Sunday favourite. The portions were generous and came with crispy roast potatoes, peas, broccoli, cabbage,

carrots, parsnips and cauliflower cheese.

Oh, and a yorkshire pudding. I had heard that Chris was the Yorkie Master and he certainly lived up to his reputation: it has to be one of the most amazing puddings mankind has ever seen or tasted.

A thick and tasty beef gravy comes in a separate container – not everyone likes gravy in the same place and quantity after all.

The Veggie Beef Option is made to a closely guarded secret recipe that Chris has spent time perfecting. Flavoursome and impressive, it includes wheat gluten, tofu, lentils, marmite, thyme, bay, star anise and seasoning.

And my daughter enjoyed a children’s chicken roast. Another generous portion, we had to keep some back for the following day.

Main courses cost £15, or £7 for a children’s portion. There’s also side dishes you can order, including meat £2.50, yorkshire pudding £1.50, cauliflower cheese £2, carrot and swede mash £2.50, pigs in blankets £2.50, extra roasties £1.50 and extra gravy £1. The recommended wine included a Domaine D’Hondrat Cuve Elle et Lui Rose 2019 – £15 per bottle – which had been well chosen.

Roast Wokingham specialises in generous portion sizes and manages that

difficult trick of serving a wide variety of vegetables that have been cooked to perfection; the fresh quality produce is reflective in the taste.
