CLASP uses May to prepare for platinum jubilee

A SELF-ADVOCACY group in Wokingham that helps people with learning disabiliti­es is to celebrate the Queen across May.

CLASP is running a series of sessions aimed to help its members learn more about the reigning monarch, ahead of the platinum jubilee celebratio­ns in June.

One of the highlights will be a Jubilee Waffles session on Tuesday, May 31.

The group will be enjoying red, white and blue waffles - strawberri­es, cream and blueberrie­s making up the colours, and the session costs £1.50. It runs from 10am to noon.

CLASP recent took over Wokingham Borough Council’s prevention services contract on behalf of its members, and there are now some additional sessions.

They include a regular puzzle drop-in event at Wokingham Library tomorrow (Friday, May 6) from 2pm-4pm. In the morning, it will run a first-aid session in associatio­n with the British Red Cross.

On Monday, May 9, there is a movie night at the Showcase Cinema, meeting at 7pm.

Tuesday, May 10, is a busy day: in associatio­n with Get Berkshire Active, a dancing to music session runs from 10am for an hour. This is followed by a Mental Health Awareness Week talk on loneliness and isolation, and then a lunch club from noon. These are all at the Bradbury Centre.

In the afternoon, there will be a gardening group at Oakfield Court, for which booking is required. This runs every Tuesday across the month.

A Happy and Healthy Club craft session runs on Wednesday, May 11, from 10am to noon, while Sedero Lounge will host an evening drop-in from

6pm to 8pm.

On Thursday, May 12, My Journey Wokingham will hold an active session, between 10am and noon.

Drama and singing will form the focus for a session on Friday, May 13. Cathy Valentine from Circus Scene will host fun with puppets from 10am, and the choir from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

Drop-in sessions run across the month from 3pm to 5pm on Mondays at the Earley Crescent Resource Centre.

Its meeting on Friday, May 20, will see a health team from Wokingham CTPLD visit, sharing informatio­n about their work.

Healthwatc­h Wokingham host a Happy and Healthy Club on Wednesday, May 25, from 10.15am to 11.45am.

The Jubilee celebratio­ns get underway with a talk about the Queen’s life. This will be given by the deputy lieutenant of Berkshire, Hugo Vickers, on Friday, May 27, from 10am.
