Poll shows Lib Dem lead over Conservatives

-

A NEW opinion poll shows the Lib Dem lead over the Conservatives is growing in Wokingham.

The UKPolling Report published earlier this month suggests that if a general election was held tomorrow, the new parliamentary seat would switch parties for the first time ever.

It would mean that the seat

Sir John Redwood has held since 1987 would switch to challenger Clive Jones.

While there is no date yet for the general election, numerous polls published by UK Polling Report have shown the Lib Dems holding a slim lead – with data based on the existing boundaries rather than the new.

The latest suggests that 37.8% would vote Lib Dem, and just 34.1% would vote Conservative.

No other parties have selected their candidate yet. In this poll, Labour would have 22.5% of the vote, and Greens 5.6%.

The overall poll suggests Labour would win 342 seats, Conservatives 206, SNP 49, Lib Dems 30, with one Green MP and 22 from other parties.

Lib Dem candidate Clive Jones said: “It’s very clear that the next General Election in Wokingham will be between me and John Redwood. That’s what voters have been telling me on the doorstep. They want a change and they know that means voting Lib Dem.

“Many Labour supporters are telling me that they will lend me their vote and support me so that we can beat John Redwood.

“The Labour party have confirmed that they will have over 200 non-target seats at the general election and that Wokingham will be one of them.”

The party recently staffed a stall in Wokingham’s Market Place, and Mr Jones said the reaction from residents had been “positive”.

He added: “I am going to continue to work hard for every vote in the General election which could come early next year.”

Sir John did not respond to a request for comment.

In the 2019 general election campaign, he declined to make statements on opinion polls, instead saying: “I am happy to talk about what I have done and wish to do if re-elected. I am putting out plenty of material on johnredwood.com.”

As Labour and the Greens have yet to select a candidate, they have not been approached for a comment.
