WORKS to improve California Cross in Finchampstead will be starting mid-February and are expected to be complete in September.

Wokingham Borough Council has appointed BQS Management Ltd to deliver the work, funded by developers of housing in the area. The improvements are designed to help pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorists by introducing measures such as new crossing points and contrasting road designs.

The project will also spruce up the area, with street furniture designed by children from local primary schools.

Earlier this week, the council held two drop-in sessions for residents, local businesses and other interested parties to meet the project team and find out more about the plans, as well as have any questions answered.

The design features aspects which have successfully worked in other areas and have won awards.

It includes:

Additional crossing points raised to pavement level and with contrasting designs, encouraging drivers to slow

down and give way.

■ Raised crossings to improve accessibility for those with mobility issues, and crossing points at right angles which those with impaired vision may prefer to use.

■ Re-designed parking at Avery Corner to prioritise pedestrians and improve access to the school.

■ Widened car park access to allow two-way movement and switch the parade car parking entry and exit to make it easier for those who can’t find a parking space in front of the

shops to move on to Avery Car Park.

■ Cosmetic improvements including new street lights, additional planting and bollards, and totems co-designed with Nine Mile Ride School and Gorse Ride School.

Cllr Paul Fishwick, executive member for active travel, transport and highways, said: “I’m thrilled that the improvements to California Cross are due to start imminently, and I know this is something that has been much anticipated by the community.

“These improvements will make the area feel more pedestrian-focused and create a communal feel to the space where people can move around safely.

“The work is being paid for by housing developers.

“We know there will be some disruption around the area while the works are taking place, but they will be carefully monitored to minimise this as much as possible.”

Phase one will begin in February 2024, which will see the works on Nine Mile Ride at the junction with Finchampstead Road, in the area adjacent to Bob’s Fish and Chips and the Londis.

Phase two will start around May 2024 on Nine Mile Ride adjacent to Cresswell’s Garage, continuing down Nine Mile Ride over the roundabout.

Phase three, due to start in July 2024 will see works take place on Avery Corner and at Avery Car Park.

The work is due to finish in September and will be carefully monitored throughout.
