MORE than 150 lonely, isolated people in Wokingham were treated to dinner and a day to remember on Christmas day.

The event was coordinated by the awardwinning charity the Link Visiting Scheme, and this year saw 156 people receive a festive dinner, a card and a gift.

Fiona Wright told Wokingham Today: “Twelve years ago we held a Christmas Day event for a few older people in our community who would otherwise have spent the day alone.

“Everyone had such a brilliant time, and we’ve done it every year since.

“Monday’s event saw the largest number of meals served, with more volunteers on hand to prepare the meal, deliver it or host a table at Floreat Montague Park school.

Fiona added: “It truly is a wonderful day.

“This type of event would not be possible without such wonderful volunteers.

“We can plan and organise, but could never deliver such an amazing day without them. Even our chef, Debbie, was a volunteer from Wellington College.”

The lunch was sponsored by Wellington College.

Fiona said: “We are truly grateful to them, and to the schools, local businesses and volunteer groups for helping keep this event going, and bringing friendship and joy to those experiencing loneliness and isolation this Christmas.”

Also in attendance was Wokingham town mayor Sally Gurney and Wokingham Borough mayor Beth Rowland.

Fiona added: “Thank you all for supporting us, and for making the event the success it was in our 25th anniversary year.”

The Link Visiting Scheme is not just about Christmas. It needs volunteers to combat isolation and loneliness, and to help make a real difference.
