Preparing for the storms

- Captain Jan Howlin from Wokingham Salvation Army, writing on behalf of Churches Together Wokingham

STORM Isha, has had quite an effect on our country over the last few days, some areas more than others.

The travel difficulties, housing damage and power cuts will take longer than the storm to repair and for some the results will have been catastrophic.

Storms and other natural events are now, for the most part, predicted and we are encouraged to take note and prepare for, we are even told the severity and how we may be affected, so that we can act to protect ourselves.

In our own lives, when difficult times hit, or we find ourselves in a period of hardship, or loss, then we rarely get a warning or have time to prepare.

We can find ourselves struggling to cope and being tossed about not knowing what or who to cling on too.

In the work we do at The Salvation

Army Wokingham with those experiencing homelessness and the vulnerable, we see many people who are living in the eye of the storm, trapped in so many ways.

In such times of hardship and difficulty it is hard to see God or to hear him.

However, God is in every situation and circumstance we find ourselves in, we just need to seek and find his voice.

God will speak to us through those around us and all kinds of ways that are not always obvious.

During the storm on Sunday night these words from the Bible came into my mind, reminding me to listen for God’s voice: “Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 (The Message).
