Fixers wanted for new cafe

-

A GROUP of volunteers want to add to the growing number of repair cafes.

Organisers wants to open a Wokingham branch and are asking people with mending skills to join them.

They hope that residents will be able to bring their broken items for repair. All Saints Church, Norreys, with its recently refurbished premises and all day cafe, is the perfect place, they say.

“It’s such a waste to throw something away when a few minutes – or sometimes an hour or so – can extend its life for years,” said organiser Anne King. “Bicycles, small electrical appliances, chairs, garments – these are all things we hope to tackle. But the list will grow as we find more people to help.”

It is hoped that the new venture will open inside the church’s new SpaceForAll cafe in the spring. It will take place monthly on a Saturday morning, which week still to be decided.

To make it happen, the group is keen to hear from the people they need.

“Skilled, handy volunteers are vital, of course,” said Ms King. “We have an electrician, a carpenter, a mechanic, and someone who sews. “But we need three more of each of these. “And people with social media posting skills to tell everyone about the cafe, hosts to welcome people and direct them to the right fixer, and others to help to set out tables and clear up at the end.

“Fixers say they love being able to work alongside other people who do what they do.

“They pick up great tips and learn new ways of doing things.”
