The cost of garden waste collections

-

In reading a recent comment in the Wokingham Roundup bulletin made by the refuse collection staff stating “we are collecting far fewer garden waste wheelie bins”.

Now can that be purely coincidental that the current Lib Dem council in their wisdom have advised of yet another price increase for your two-weekly collection – up to £86 per annum.

I ask of the Council, have you ever bothered to survey charges of other Councils in England? If the answer is yes then please publish your findings to satisfy Wokingham residents they are not being short-changed.

Has the council considered the possible side effects of residents opting out of this service, such as flytipping and a considerable increase in car journeys to and from re3 facilities?

The Council implore people to cycle or walk to avoid using your car, save the planet is a constant plea, try walking with your garden waste or securing it to your cycle for your trip to either Bracknell or Reading re3 depot.

Another point while writing is once again the subject of overflowing waste bins, in particular those sited opposite Merryhill Green Lane and the other immediately alongside the children’s play area in Watmore Lane, Winnersh.

They were nothing short of a disgusting health hazard, as they contained a large amount of dog waste bags.

I will finish on a positive note, not for Wokingham but Chippenham, Wilts. Having spent Easter weekend in Chippenham I had the pleasure of walking in several areas where bins were plentiful, clean and tidy alongside manicured shrubs and bushes all maintained by the Council, also kerbs and pavements were devoid of overgrown weeds.

Wokingham at one time belonged to the Premier Division as a place to live, we would be lucky to stay in the Championship League the way we are sliding down the table.

Liberal Democrats take note as voting takes place on May 2.

David Weston, Winnersh
