What is your earliest memory? I have such happy memories of my childhood in burnaby, british Columbia. I remember my dad, who worked as a commercial salmon fisherman, taking me out in his boat. and my beautiful mum, who stayed at home to raise my younger sisters and me, driving around with me in my “little green machine”.

Did you have a career plan B? I was close to studying to become a journalist. at 24 years old, I’d been working the nightclubs since I was 16 and record companies kept saying, “you’re a very talented kid, but we just don’t see how this could work commercially.” the funny thing is though, once a record company did sign me, I started writing a column for a magazine – and I was terrible at it.

What does success mean to you today? It has nothing to do with business or money or any of that stuff – it’s just about family. their happiness and wellbeing is all that matters.

What is the most valuable advice you’ve received? treat others the way you wish to be treated – I learnt that from my dad. He’s kind, compassionate and a real gentleman. I don’t tell him enough, but I look up to him a lot and I try to be like him with my own kids.

Tell us about your new fragrance, By Invitation Peony Noir. It has a timeless quality and a freshness – I think that’s what makes a good fragrance. It was important to me to get everything right, from the smell to the design of the bottle, but it was exciting to let go a little bit. With my first fragrance [by Invitation], I micromanaged in a big way, but this time I was able to trust the team more.

What is your best quality? the ability to have unconditional love because that’s what my parents gave me.

And your worst? I lack control a lot of the time – one hamburger, one drink – it’s just never enough. I’m a binger, but I’m learning to get better as I get older.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? I’d have Jesus there, not just for the knowledge that he’d probably impart, but also because he could turn my water into wine. then I’d have my wife, luisana, because she tells it to me straight, and also Elvis Presley – so that we could do karaoke together.

What is your biggest pet hate? Narcissism. being in this business, it’s all around me. I hate the culture of celebrity.

What is your favourite fashion item?

I love socks. Every day is different – yesterday was hearts, the day before was a C-3Po pair and the day before that was Iron Man. I like to be creative.

Ever made a fashion faux pas? the question is, how many? I am one! I don’t have all my shirt buttons done up, I’m not wearing a belt and my stomach is hanging over – that’s a faux pas in itself, right? I used to wear bright underwear and one day, my suit ripped on stage. I had yellow boxers on and did the whole show with people laughing. I just thought they were having a good time!

How do you relax? by eating a bit too much, renting a movie on itunes and falling asleep on the couch. and now that I’ve got two boys [Noah, five, and Elias, two], I get to watch Spider-Man and The Lego Batman Movie. I think luisana was so excited about the arrival of our little girl [Viva, three months] because she’ll get to watch girly stuff.

How does it feel to have welcomed a daughter recently? I’m getting older and more tired, but it’s the best experience. It means more love, more responsibility, more happiness… and less sleep!

What keeps you awake at night? the worry of being a parent – I think you always worry.

What is your guiltiest pleasure? Prawn cocktail crisps, bangers and mash, Marmite on toast and Christmas music all day – no, all year. Honestly, I will listen to bing Crosby in July.

What is top of your bucket list? I’d love to have my family on a party island where we could hang with the kids in the day and then get wasted at night. w&h
