‘I switch off from all life’s stresses’

JULIe CoNveRY, 55, is a jewellery designer who lives in Coggeshall, essex. she and her husband gavin have two daughters, orla, 21, and esme, 16, and a Bichon Frise called Mabel.

Mabel came into our family eight years ago as a gift from my dad and stepmum. She’s a lovely little friend and I adore our walks – there’s a mindfulness about strolling along with a dog. It’s so calming. I switch off from all life’s stresses and just focus on how pleasurable it is for her and me. Naturally, I have got to know all the other local “dog people” too. Although I had local friends before, as we moved here from London 13 years ago, I have been integrated into the community in a very different way, thanks to Mabel. Owning a dog really opens up and enhances your life.
