Skin enemy #2: Technology

-

We’re all wedded to our phones or handheld devices, pretty much 24/7. But whether you indulge in one too many Facebook or Instagram sessions, or are partial to a Netflix binge on your iPad in bed, science is proving that our tech addiction isn’t doing our skin any good. “Research shows that the blue light emitted from phones causes free radical damage and induces degrading enzymes in the skin. This causes damage to collagen and can slow down its production, resulting in ageing,” explains Dr Maryam Zamani, leading oculoplastic surgeon and aesthetic doctor. “It also stimulates melanin production, meaning an increase of pigmentation.” Blue light, also known as high-energy visible (HEV) rays, also suppresses the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, so if you’re using your phone before bed, this can make it more difficult to fall asleep, and when you’re sleep-deprived, your skin suffers.

But aside from ditching your phone or your tablet altogether, what can you

do to protect your skin? “You can buy a blue light screen shield for your smartphone or tablet to protect your eyes and skin from the effects of blue light, or simply put your phone on its night mode setting,” advises Dr Zamani. This disables the blue light in favour of a more skin-friendly yellow light. Skincare-wise, topical antioxidants are a must in helping the skin to protect itself from blue light. Vitamins C and E, and zinc can help fight oxidative damage, and diminish the negative effects of blue light on the skin.
