‘Don’t fight it alone’

-

“I’d advise anyone struggling with mental health problems not to fight it alone. See your GP and talk to people you’re close to – they will help. Just saying the words ‘I am not well’ can lift so much weight from your shoulders.

After being diagnosed with severe anxiety, moderate depression and symptoms of OCD, I saw a local psychotherapist and my GP prescribed antidepressants, which have been a huge help. I soon learnt that anxiety can be a form of wanting control over everything in your life. As social media was a factor, I deleted most of my accounts.

I also signed up to the charity SANE, which sent me text messages once a week for a month. It’s amazing how nice little notes of support can help in the beginning stages of battling a mental illness. Two months on, I feel so much better, as if the noise in my head is turned down a little.” Mel, 23†
